Anyone know about philosophy? I don't. And I need someone who does!

A little bit, what sort of thing are you interested in/do you need to know?

It's a bit complicated, a bit open-ended.

I'm writing a story. One of the characters is a recent graduate in philosophy. I could do with talking to someone who knows about philosophy, to help me:
  • • figure out how studying the subject has shaped his worldview and stuff
    • establish which philosopher(s) or school(s) of philosophy appeal to him and perhaps help to validate his understanding of the world
    • establish what his dissertation would have been about
    • try and make sure the things he says sound like the sort of things an indie type who likes philosophy might really say, rather than the sort of things a clumsy writer might think he'd say.
I think the best way to do it would be by email, not on here. If anyone thinks they might be able to help, shout up and I can tell you more about the character's background and outlook and that.

Don't all rush at once. :)

Sounds pretty interesting. Stephen from my band may possibly be able to help, shall pass that on and see if he can help you out. I'm not up on it enough to help you, and most of what I read philosophy-wise is (mostly environmental) ethics stuff. Hope you manage to sort it out!

Cheers Laura - that's really good of you!

I guess the obvious answer is I shouldn't create a character with a close interest in something I don't know much about. But where's the fun in that, eh?

Or do one of those silly tests, fill in the answers as if you're the character. Then research the philosophers that come out a little more on The Internet.

Which philosopher do you most agree with?

Which philosopher are you?

etc.

Oh, that's peculiar. One of those said I was the philosopher I'd chosen at random for my character to like, just as a placeholder until I do some research. It said I was 100 per cent that philosopher. Interesting.
