Urgent help needed...

Further to my previous post, I cannot find work that I have done.

I opened (rather than saved) a file in Excel, and did 3 hours work on it, saving regularly.

I cannot now find the work I've done.
An older version of the file (with the same filename) exists on the hard drive in My Documents, but, the version with the work done on it is nowhere to be seen.

Looking in 'recent documents' shows another file with the same filename, but, a more recent date, which is listed as a shortcut file to the file which doesn't have the work done.

Where on earth would it have put the version I worked on, and as said, saved regularly?

Could you tell your computer to search for all excel documents opened or modified in a given timeframe using the start - search for files - advanced search function?

If you've been saving it, it's possible the original file attached to your email will have the updates in it. But unlikely.

Yep...already tried that - and both for c:\ and My Documents.

Also tried looking in the email in Outlook Express - that has the file without the work done on it.

I've also tried searching for a text string that would be in the finished version - no joy.

It must have saved it somewhere.
(In Win98, when I, occasionally, made the same mistake, it would save it in a folder called 'Temp' which was in C:\windows, several levels down.). Have WinXP here now (I'm writing this from work).

If what I think has happened has happened, I do this all the time. What you need to do is reopen the document from the email, go to save as, and it'll show you the temp directory that it's saving to - the document that's been worked on should be saved in there. For some reason XP has a complicated structure of temporary folders for files from email attachments.

Sorry, that doesn't work either. Save As seems to point it to My Documents.

(BTW, it's Outlook Express 6).

You've probably done this already, but did you look in the Recycle Bin?

Does anyone know of a free online application to convert a .docx file to a .doc file? i've tried Zamzar which seems to be the main one but it's blocked at work, in fact most of them are either blocked at work or require some sort of download which i can't do..

Either that, or does someone want to convert a file for me?

Is Google Docs blocked? If not you can upload the file there, and then choose 'Download' in the 'File' menu and save it as a .doc file. I just tested it and it works, although for more complicated documents it'll probably mess up the lay-out slightly. Should work smoothly for documents containing mostly text.

Alternatively, drop me a line.

Next question....

As my wi-fi signal is borderline, I kept my wifi adaptor (D-Link DWL 520) and had it put in my new machine. I have a high gain (12db) external antenna with a 2 metre lead. An internal antenna would not be strong enough. It works fine, but, there is one slight problem.

On my old machine (windows 98se for those of you that don't know), if I wanted to look up the signal strength, it came up as a bar that went 2 thirds of the way across the screen. Underneath, it would display the numeric value, in increments of 4. Moving the antenna maybe a couple of inches would make a big difference to signal. My peak signal, when the antenna is in optimum position is 62%.

The problem that I am now having is that instead of the signal bar, I now have a TINY triangular icon (1-2 bars lit up), and no numeric value. This makes tweaks to the antenna position (where I may be a metre away from the screen) virtually impossible. How do I get the old signal bar back?

RIGHT.

I can't get my laptop to connect to the wireless network. i'm using a 2nd laptop on the network right now so i know it's not a problem with the router or anything.

My other laptop finds the network, i enter the key and then it just says "acquiring network address" and does bugger all.

helps?

We're having the same problem! We've solved it by using a wire for the one that doesn't work. Let me know if you work it out.

I used to have the same problem with my work laptop. Actually, it took me months before I realised that they hadn't disabled wireless access! It turned out that another program (a Vodafone program that enabled me to go online in trains and stuff, but that could also be used for normal wireless connections) was blocking the wireless connections (and, just like in your case, I got as far as trying to acquire a network address). I have disabled the program and have not had any problems since. So could it be that another program is effectively blocking the wireless?

DVD question....I asked a while ago about making my PC DVD player multi-region. I got a good, detailed answer from Gordon, but, was told that it was risky. Not wanting to take the risk, I decided against it.

I've thought of a new way round the problem. If I got myself a SECOND DVD drive (they're cheap enough these days...), could I have both connected to the PC at the same time, but, with one being region 1 and the other being region 2?

Thats doable. But you may as well "take the risk" and set up your exisiting dvd as multiregion. If you can afford to buy another, you can afford to buy a replacement for the one you already have should it go pear shaped.

Hello,

I've got an excel spreadsheet with a column containing 140 or so e-mail addresses. Is there a way of importing those address into the 'bcc' field of an e-mail? Even trying to copy and paste each one doesn't seem to work.
