Is yr new broadband provider having DNS issues?

You could try changing the DNS settings on your laptop to use OPEN DNS:

http://www.opendns.com/opendns-ip-addresses
not really here

My laptop is just being a right dick. It started acting weird but I ran anti-virus stuff and found nothing. My friend said to do a system reset thingy, so I backed up some stuff but the fucking thing won't reset!

Is there like a MEGARESET like where you jam a needle inside it or something? What was it that had those? Watches, that was it.
I am struck speechless by the nape of your neck.

When I turn my laptop on I'm presented with a blank screen and then NOTHING ELSE HAPPENS. This is bad, right?

Now that Google Docs/Drive seems to have stopped providing for it, what's the best way of turning a doc/docx file into a PDF?

Arrrgh! I've just accidently removed myself from the sudo group on my home server and the root account is not enabled for login - I'm screwed aren't I? Stupid, stupid me.
