Re: Android

Post by tonieee » Thu Dec 02, 2010 12:09 pm

I just caught my phone downloading an update to google maps that I didn't request. It's annoying because if I'd wanted to get an update for google maps (which I don't because I don't use it - I use open street map instead) I would have requested it while connected to wifi rather than using up the small 3G limit that I have. I didn't know apps could update themselves - I thought they just notified you that an update was available. Has anyone else noticed this?

Even iPhones don't do that, that I'm aware. Google are being naughty boys.

Never seen that happen myself except on apps where I checked the "allow automatic updating" box in Market.

I've not seen that box on any apps that I've installed myself. I didn't install google maps myself, the phone came with it installed, so maybe it was enabled when it was installed. I'll check that out, thanks!

I do have that option but only for apps I installed myself. So maybe they were enabled when it was installed. There doesn't seem to be any way to uninstall it either which really sucks. This was not the Android I was looking for!

Is your phone "branded" by a network? Fortunately for me mine is a vanilla HTC Desire even though I got if direct from Three. No such problems here.

I think it's the manufacturer (Sony Ericsson) that have locked it up. I looked into rooting it but apparently nobody's worked out how to do it and make it work yet.

That's me not buying any Sony phones for the foreseeable future, then...

I feel the same but I guess I'm stuck with a Sony phone for the foreseeable future.

Currently playing: Wordfeud. It's a Scrabble thing basically. You can play against friends or just get set up with a random. When it's your turn you have two days to make a word, so you can leave it and go back. And you can have more than one game on at once.

If anyone wants to play me, my user name is Sweet_nothing

It's really good but I'm getting annoyed with the number of spineless bleeders who just quit the game whimpering when you play one decent word against them. Honestly, this country.

So for the first time ever, my phone just asked me if I wanted to install an updated version of Android.

So I went over to the wi-fi settings to make sure I was downloading through my home ISP and not 'on the meter'. And then I couldn't get back to the install an updated version of Android bit. There were more than six things running, so it didn't show up on the window menu thing that comes up when you hold down the home button.

And now it's not asking me if I want to install an updated version of Android any more. It's gone. Gone forever.

go to settings>about phone>system software updates

and then welcome to the future.

That's just asking me whether I want to be prompted before it updates, or whether the phone should do it automatically.

hmm, strange one. on mine (2.2) there's a check for updates now at the bottom of the screen.

Yeah. I'm the only one with a Tattoo though and everyone else has got a Desire or whatever.

It's just like at school when I used to get beat up cos my Spectrum was the one with only 16K.

I've just checked on my phone, which is an LG Summatorother, and I can't even find anything to do with upgrading the Android system! Oh well, it works at present...

Ooh, someone is trying to chat me up on Wordfeud as we speak. I played the word SHAG (what? It was a precious 27 points) and up popped the chat bubble.

If anyone fancies a game, I'm 'listlessness' on there.

That's really funny.

I wonder how many people have been turned down with the line: "No thanks, I just wanted the points."

Ah, so that's you! Right, I'm going to try to make some wildly filthy words now that I know who I'm playing.

I'm vom, if anyone else wants a game.
