Cars Can Be Nice

This is the car I dreamed of owning as a child: a pre-'74 MGB GT V8. Why? Who knows. I remember being very anxious that by the time I was old enough to afford one (and the insurance on a sports car) there would not be enough left! Cute. I figured that by the time I was in my mid-twenties I would realistically be able to afford one. Well think on, kiddo.

Cream or British racing green were my preferred colourways:

This is what befell the MGB in 1974 - ugg-er-lee rubber bumpers : –

Now you've got me started...

I reckon on the British sports car front I'd maybe err towards a soft top Triumph of some sort. But anyway, seeing as this topic is here, these are my cars in some of the wonderful places they've taken me to: -

My 2cv up Mount Olypmus in Greece, in 1999: -

The same car, and me, in Norway last August: -

And again, this time with friends in France last month: -

My Mehari, somewhere in France: -

My Dyane and I, last July: -

Yes, cars are nice!!

Jono, just because you dropped me off on the Chesterfield Road once a few months ago, does not make cars public transport. :)

- Ha, now looking at this, I take your point about the unassailable butchness of the Citroën, heh.

Heheh, no, it was *my* idea to put them in public transport... really there didn't seem to be anywhere massively suitable, but it seemed to make more sense to put it with other modes of transport than with knitting and gardening. Oh, it's been moved! Oh well. Here's a couple of those cute as a button Triumph convertibles Jonathan mentions above (I thought it was probably the Spitfire you were thinking of? Correct me if I'm wrong!):

Ah yes, Spitfires are nice. I went to check one over with a friend who wanted one this time last year. She didn't buy it, but the run out in it was fun! I also like Vitesses and I drove a Stag last summer too, which was nice. I sold a 2cv to the Stag's owner - he's hardly used the Stag or his modern car since then as he prefers his 2cv!

Ah yes, my Mehari is actually an ex-French military one. It's super-cool, but I think they look better in bright colours, on the beach, with girls in/around them: -

Ooh! I don't think I've seen a Vitesse before. Pictures are everything with this thread I feel so here's one, on the beach with some girls, as you do:

And here's the handsome Stag:

Ah yes, but it's got to be a soft-top Vitesse. Really though, all my favourite cars are Citroens. For example, I'd love a DS: -

Jono, these photos are so beautiful and you look so happy next to your cyan blue 2CV!!
I love 2CVs too- they are my favourites cars along with VW beetles :-)

My aunt had a lovely green 2CV. I have so many memories of her driving this car around the countly with us, me, my cousin and my little brother in the back seat. Needless to say, this car broke down countless times and it would take for ever to reach the nearest seaside resort in summers but it was so much fun.

I still remember its folding windows and the canvas roof could be rolled completely open and me and my brother loved to stick our heads out the open roof as you guys do in one of these photos.
Lovely memories...
I slice the surface here beside you/Lungs filled liquid yell I love you/Sound moves further underwater
Deep and dark my submarine bells groan in greens and grey/Mine would chime a thousand times/To make you feel okay..

I used to want my MG to be a convertible. But then I realised I would also need to garage it and that it wouldn't be so great in the winter... But seeing as this is all in the realm of fantasy, yes why not :D

There's nothing wrong with wanting a DS in any colour, Amy, especially not brown!

Hi Gofelt. I'm pleased to have stirred some happy memories for you! I grew up with 2cvs as well, as my Dad has had them since before I was born - he still has two now. They're not really that slow though y'know - I did over 750 miles one day in my Dyane, from just over the French/German border back to Derbyshire. No sweat!

I'm off to look at another one to (possibly) buy tonight:-)

I've got a Citroen but it's a Saxo VTR - the least indie car ever

How exciting!! There seems to be a lot of variation within the 2cv marque - what are your favourite models? What's the one you're going to look at tonight like?

this is the only pic i've got online but it's covered in snow. It's not chavved up or anything. Do I get added indie points because I've had it from new for 7 years and my parents bought it for me?

this is the only car i have ever thought is cool. i want to get it because i'm pretty tall, and if i had one and climbed out of it, i'd be like that guy in the simpsons who nelson laughs at. "do you find something amusing about my choice of auto-mo-bile?"

An hour ago my ex girlfriend picked me up (she was here to take pictures of me. I'm a model! No, not really, but she needed me for some sort of school project pictures anyway) in one of these and took me for a ride across Amsterdam:

Image

It's a cute car. Fun. Very uncomforable.

Er, do you want to be here all day?!?!?!?!

The one I'm going to look at tonight is red and white. I've always really wanted a yellow one (like James Bond), as that's the one my Dad had when I was a child. Erm, and many many more!

Fiat 500s are lovely! I drove a friend's one around Hove Park once, but I think she's sold it now. Shame.

there's a garage around the corner from where my parents live that specializes in renovating DSs, and the street is always full of them. they almost make me want to get a driver's licence.

YES! adorable

Heh! Yes they are pretty uncomfortable and a little unnerving to drive too - I imagine the Fiat 500 would feel similar, kind of... really small, jittery and the feeling there's not much between you, and you being smeared all over tarmac.

Such cute pictures! Thanks :D

Despite having failed four driving tests, I've already owned two cars: a brown mini (that was just £200!) that I learned in, and then I had the opportunity to buy a lovely cream Morris Minor for just £400 so I sold the mini and traded up...

Image

But yeah, I eventually got fed up with spending money on tests that I was never going to pass because I got such bad nerves I could hardly even understand English while I was on them - and moved to Bristol, so I would be in the metropolis and not really need to drive (unlike where I was living previously which was three miles away from a four-a-day bus service and seven miles from the nearest town - a 40min bike ride thanks to all the hills).

You definitely get indie points for the fact that it's covered in snow! "Car in the snow, where do you go, to find something you can eat..." etc etc

Sadly, I currently drive a Vauxhall Yawnmobile. But my dream car is probably a Saab 96:
