Suburban Kids go on at 11 apparently.

Popfest seems to have made the front page of nycgo.com today as the major tourist attraction that it is!

Wow, this is getting really soon now. I should probably say Eeeeeee or something.

these are the only popfest pics I ended up taking. Sometimes I want to take pictures of everything and other times I get so self-conscious. I didn't even get a picture of Marcy and Chris! Boo.

Anyway. They're from the first night. The Ballet headlined. I got there in time to see My Teenage Stride, who were on just before and are always consistently good live. I was a little disappointed that a lot of the crowd cleared out before the Ballet took the stage. and surprised as I think they were the best band on the bill. I thought they played great and Greg told a nice little endearing story about KFC that had us all laughing. Every time I see him, I think of Billy Bragg's line "just because you're gay, I won't turn you away". hee. I'm really excited about the new album that should come out this year. I miss the violin (and cello) but the new songs are fantastic. I love when they do their cover of Magnetic Fields Take Ecstasy With Me because that's one of my favorites but whenever the MF's do it, Claudia sings it and I think she totally butchers it.

Friday we caught the Tartans, Radio Dept., Liechtenstein and Cats on Fire. All good, of course. Liechtenstein I was really excited to see and spent the whole day at work listening to the few songs they had on their myspace on repeat. Which is a good thing because live they didn't grab me in the same way. I don't know if it was my mood or the sound in the venue or what. But I picked up whatever they had for sale (full length, ep, 7") and have really enjoyed listening to them again. They were really cute and seemed excited to be there, which makes it more fun to watch. Cats on Fire were ON FIRE. They were my favorite last year but their new album wasn't doing much for me so I wasn't as excited to see them again, but wow. They sounded incredible and Matthias is definitely meant for the stage. Both Liechtenstein and Cats on Fire are playing again tomorrow and I'm looking forward to seeing them again.

I missed the Saturday shows! boo. I was only really disappointed about missing Eux Autres but I just couldn't get out there. And Sunday I only stayed to see The Smittens and Rose Melberg. I love the Smittens! They played the theme song to the Golden Girls and that song is lovely on it's own but imagine the Smittens singing! Aw. The sound at Cakeshop is never good but Rose's voice is so pretty. She had to borrow a guitar and she complained about it having sticky strings or something, which kind of caused it to make strange noises, I think. She was cute, said she was too busy enjoying her time in New York that she forgot to practice! hee. I would've loved to have seen the Suburban Kids WBN again, but it was getting late and I was beat.

I liked how there was the BBQ last year. You could sit around and actually meet and talk to people. I missed that.

Oh! but while we were having dinner a few doors down, I think I spotted B&S's Bob Kildea. Is it him? What do you think?

Great line from a great song indeed!

Gosh! I did not know they they covered that Magnetic Fields song with any regularity (or at all)! I wonder if they did it at their London show here earlier this year. Wow!

That sounds like something I would say! :D They were just incredible at last year's Popfest, weren't they? Like you I am not smitten with the new album either but I can't wait to see him prance about the stage again. *swoon*

You took this Sunday night? Then it probably was him! He was in Chicago on Saturday night with the Vaselines and then they played New York tonight!

ha. I also got a 10 sec video clip of the Ballet doing Corduroy but I was too embarrassed to let it keep going cause I was right in his face.

Also, that line of his "and then I stand on the bar with my acoustic guitar in a pair of dungarees that show everything" always makes me blush.
