Early November and global warming = yes, you may catch the tail end of fall foliage. October is really best, but it will still be lovely and autumnal! I just booked our room at a local HoJos (Howard Johnson's). I've never stayed there and it feels incredibly appropriate to our little NE road trip.

Yay - visitors from overseas!

I've spent all day emailing bands and we're going to make announcements soon. To whet your appetite, here's a partial list of confirms (you can also look on the Popfest NE myspace for more hints):
http://www.myspace.com/popfestnewengland

HIGHLIGHTS will include Magnus Karlsson from The Charade playing solo!!!!
and also Utah Rangers from Sweden!!!!!

Maybe we should call it "yellow & blue night?"

The 500's - Portland, ME
The Bright Lights - Brooklyn, NY
Bunnygrunt - St. Louis, MO
Dream Bitches - Ridgewood, NY
The Fawns - Northampton, MA
Magnus Karlsson of The Charade and Happydeadmen - Sweden
Lima Research Society - New Jersey
One Happy Island - Boston, MA
Math the Band - Rhode Island / Boston, MA
Singing Bridges - Oakville, CT
Surefire Broadcast - Hammonton, NJ
The Hat Company - Ohio
Todd Newman - Minneapolis, MN
The Toothaches - Cambridge, MA
The Up Set - Middle River, MD
Utah Rangers from Sweden

The Smittens will probably play, they're just checking their schedule. We certainly welcome suggestions, but things are firming up quickly and our meager budget keeps us in check.

Ask if you need anything! Are you guys renting a car?

Bunnygrunt--yay!
Smittens--yay!

How about The Feelies? They'd be a crowd drawer!

I'm trying to think of other east coast bands in the realm of possibility. I know besties are touring and POBPAH. Is Jonathan Richman out of the question? He plays here a lot in small venues.

Hello!
I'm Dunc (soft revolution)'s girlfriend and I'm VERY excited about this trip.
We're going to hire a car to drive up from New York on the Friday, I think. Then we were thinking of booking the Quality Inn in Northampton as it seems to be walking distance of the venue. I think they must have taken it over from Best Western.

I'm even more excited about this than before Indietracks. That's pretty darn excited.

Hello! It will be nice to see you again. This time I'll be the local. We're staying at a HoJos in Hadley cuz it was cheap. I'm not sure why the Quality Inn didn't come up in my search, though I could cancel the HoJos w/need be. There's a couple of others going fr. NYC if you want to share gas money (yubes/impabafree and maybe Lynsey?) Talk amongst yourselves!

I didn't think of you as driving from NYC--but I guess you very well could be, right? It's my wishful thinking that someone will fly in to Boston and keep me company on the drive!

I think paba and I are still planning on taking the gross bus to Boston, Marcy. Mostly because I'm so curious about it.

However, car pooling is also an option.

If there are accommodations within walking distance that's not that much more expensive, maybe we can change our booking? I can look into it later.

I don't know if I can squeeze in the gross bus! What if I have to fly on Friday? And I don't have time to gross bus back to New York. And I'd be gross bussing alone!

Also, can we make Smittens play on Saturday and not Sunday?

Also, if I can't come to this afterall, can we have a weekend in NYC with Mondo's this fall or winter?

I think we will hire a car on the Friday and drive up from New York. Then we will be driving to Boston straight after the bands finish Saturday night to fly home again. We will have to consume many caffineated beverages and listen to something LOUD to cope with this plan.

The car hire is about a third of the price from Newark airport than anywhere else for some reason so will probably do that.

Any idea how long a drive in the daytime from Newark to Northampton might take?

If anyone wants a lift up there, stake your claim soon so I can book the right sized car.

Yep, hopefully we can have a conversation which doesn't involve travel arrangements, (extremely confusing) directions or finding overnight accommodation!

Oh, too bad I'm staying 'til Monday--I could have given you a lift back to Boston. I live pretty close to the airport. You'll have to hit Dunkin' Donuts all the way back--good thing there's no shortage in Massachusetts.

I reckon it'll take you around 4 hours--maybe a little less--to drive to Amherst fr. Newark depending on traffic.

We've tried before, he's a hard guy to get in touch with.

But if you stand outside the club you may see J. Mascis.

yes, the Ballet! they would be wonderful. I am obviously going, as I have not missed one yet. Its really a wonderful community experience. Everyone goes out to lunch and walks around Northampton together. Warm beverages, record shopping, good friends and POP! What more could you ask for? I will be driving up from NYC if anyone needs a ride.
