Are there any indiepop Kiwis?

Post by Blank Frack » Tue Aug 05, 2008 4:55 pm

I'm emigrating to NZ with my girlfriend at the end of the year and wondered if any anoraky types fancied showing me the indiepop sights of Wellington or forming an Antipodean version of the Parallelograms.

Don't all rush at once...

Yes!

There are no indiepop sights Wellington (as far as I'm aware), but if you're into poppy roots/dub music with one eye on the charts you'll be in for a treat. They don't call it Dubbington for nothing. Slowboat Records is a pretty great shop though, and it probably is the prettiest of the major Auckland cities.

I'm from Auckland, am now living in London, but am moving back there in a couple of months.

You should make sure you go to Camp A Low Hum though, which is kinda like an NZ Indietracks - only not just indiepop. http://alowhum.com/camp-a-low-hum/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And yes forming an Antipodean Parallelograms would be brilliant "I wish that it was 1982 / With Sneaky Feelings and The Verlaines ooh" - I can see it now.

I've forgotten what your question is now, but I can probably attempt to answer any more that you have.

Cheese On Toast (http://www.cheeseontoast.co.nz" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) is wider than indiepop, but it'll give you an idea what's going on. It's Auckland based but there are Wellington listings.

I think The Gladeyes (http://www.myspace.com/thegladeyes" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) and Little Pictures (http://www.myspace.com/lotsoflittlepictures" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) are ace. And Lil' Chief Records (http://www.lilchiefrecords.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) is the home of The Brunettes and The Ruby Suns. The Sing Songs also look good (http://www.myspace.com/wesingsongs" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). I'll get to see them next month.

Hopefully this helps!

Thanks Grumpytimes and Michael. Looks like I'll have to have a ten hour drive to Auckland whenever I want some hot janglepop action. Or develop a major love for poppy roots/dub. Hmmm...

Hopefully I'll get to meet both of you when I get there :)

You could have a listen to that. It's a show that's quite indiepop on Auckland's student radio station. A Wellington person would be better able to tell you about Wellington I guess. Little Pictures and The Sing Songs are there though, and there'll be others.

You'll also be able to see The Bats and The Clean now and then. I don't know of anything here that sounds like you guys though, so it would be brilliant if you did start something up.

Looks like all the SAP jobs in NZ are in Auckland so I think we're going to end up in the big city after all.

We're flying out on 1st December so it would be cool if all you Kiwicutiepopkids could make sure there are lots of popshows laid on to help me feel at home in those first few friendless weeks :)

There's a Ruby Suns show on December 4th. I'm looking forward to that.

We could have an Auckland meetup sometime before Christmas?

We arrive early on the morning of the 3rd so provided I've shaken off the worst of the jetlag I'll try and find the Ruby Suns gig. I'm totally diggin' the tracks you can stream off Sealion on their website.

Failing that, an Auckland meetup would be an entirely marvellous thing. Anyone else up for it?

i will almost certainly be going to that ruby suns show, so that'll be one more - i think they''ll be playing with dictaphone blues who are pretty cool too.

my girlfriend and i currently have vague plans for trying to start a clubnight somewhere, but haven't really put much effort into it so far. we really want it to be free and are struggling to find anywhere that can make that possible.

Mark. You finally have a date then? Very good. Must be a relief to know when. Does this mean you will be coming to the All Day thing in Nottingham now then?

:) Would that be like a Parallelograms tribute band? They could be called the Trapezoids, because they wouldn't quite be the Parallelograms (sounds a bit too like a Psychobilly band though mebbe).

Aw, that takes me back to the great girlfriend drought of the 1990's!

Very, very probably. I must remember to ask A Layer Of Chips if there are any tickets still available. And try and get a B&B or summat for drunken afterwardsness.

Hurrah! This emigration business is all terrifically exciting and becoming moreso by the minute.

Good stuff. Is there a ridiculous amount of stuff to get organised or can you just spend a month getting up late, playing computer games and going down the pub?

The former I'm afraid. It's a never ending pile of paperwork, packing and prattling on the phone to Kiwi job agencies. I'm waiting for an interviewer to ring me as I type in fact.

I'm having a pub night tomorrow though so if anyone rings me during that then they'll have to deal with my drunken, belligerent alter-ego.

i arrived back in nz expecting everyone to be into minisnap, but the new album seems to have to very little traction. the sale bin at real groovy has heaps of copies of it for as little as NZ$3.

i heard they may have a contribution on one of the upcoming "waiting for the now" singles!!

There's also a Bats show on December 12th. No Minisnap though. Some details here,
