I'm happy to report that we've already got 23 bands from 6 different countries confirmed for our split series.

We'll likely be announcing the first few releases in January and continuing for a long while after that.

In order to keep myself busy between releases we're going to start doing a lot of interviews and posting them on our blog at http://fallenloverecords.tumblr.com/

This week I'll be interviewing both Veronica Falls and The Tuts!

Still waiting to hear back from VF but in the meantime here's an interview I did with Chris MacFarlane of Jigsaw Records:

We talk about Jigsaw, Suretoss, mail-orders in 2014, and what happened to IndiePages.

I've been playing this game, and it's a blast! You all should play it. There are prizes.
Thaw Yr Bones
is an interactive game organized by Fallen Love Records and running from February 23 to April 2, 2014. Participation is open to anyone from anywhere on planet Earth.

The Gist

Thaw Yr Bones comprises a series of challenges and activities to be completed by you and submitted to us.

A simple challenge will be posted every weekday morning with a harder challenge posted Saturday mornings that covers the entire weekend.

Challenges could involve taking photos, making things, or interacting with your community in some manner.

You can participate as an individual or as a team. Teams can be of any number but if you have more than 5 participants you might want to consider splitting into two teams.

New challenges should be posted by 10:00 AM Eastern Standard Time most days. Submissions for the previous day’s challenge will be accepted up until the point that the next challenge has been made available.

All submissions should be sent to harley@fallenloverecords.com

All challenges will be posted on our active Tumblr, linked to from our Facebook page, and archived on this page here.

Scoring

For most challenges, scoring will be as follows:

5 points to the winner/most creative/our favorite entry

3 points to any submissions received that day

1 point to any submissions received by April 2

This means that if you miss a day or come to the game late you can still go back and complete all the old challenges to earn points.

The Prizes

1st Place
-one physical copy of every Fallen Love catalog release
-one Fallen Love temporary tattoo per team member
-we will interview you for the third issue of zine Secret Gardens
-a Fallen Love musical act will cover a song of your choice and post it on YouTube

I've been continuing our interview series over on our blog: http://fallenloverecords.tumblr.com/

Most of the interviews are indiepop related and we tend to discuss things like pop culture and what it's like in our cities and songwriting and things like that. I think they're pretty interesting reads even if you're not all that familiar with the bands in question.

So far on the blog I've got interviews with:
band Thee Ahs
concert series SELF PITY
record label Kingfisher Bluez
band The Fireworks
band Costanza
band Pins & Needles
record label Jigsaw Records
band The Tuts

We'll have an interview with the band Sleuth up soon and Veronica Falls agreed to do an interview but I sent them questions months ago and they haven't responded so I think that might not be happening.

After a little over three years of activity I regret to announce that Fallen Love Records is going on indefinite hiatus. I'm proud of the releases that I've helped bring into the world thus far but I've lost thousands of dollars in the process and literally don't have anymore to spend. Hopefully someday we'll be back.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to actually sell music and make money as an indie label in the 21st century, I'd love to hear it. As it is, I interviewed a number of other label heads this year and they all seemed more or less in the same boat as me. Most music fans seem to just want to stream their tunes these days but there's no money to be made from streaming. Meanwhile recording, mastering, running a website, etc. still costs money. So it feels a little futile.

I guess if I was a proper adult with a decent career I could invest thousands into running a label without worrying about earning it back because it would just be a nice little hobby. Alas I'm an unemployed university graduate with an English degree who still lives with his parents and can't even find a crappy part-time retail job. So some dreams have to be abandoned, I suppose.
