One of my favorite pop musicians is Jenny Omnichord. She's so named because she plays the omnichord, a keyboard-type instrument.

Maylee Todd is another Toronto soul-pop musician that I love and she plays the kalimba. According to Wikipedia it's a member of the mbira family, also known as the African thumb piano. When she's on stage it looks like she's playing Game Boy.

Part of why I love Haiku Salut is the whole unusual instruments thing. I don't even know what some of them are called!

I like the omnichord. We might be using one in our new band.

Autoharps always sound great to my ears.
Telephone directories were also a big part of the Motown sound early on. They used to get whoever was around to bang on them during recordings to beef up the rhythm. Pop fact!
vacuum cleaners are underused though do sound ace. Swell Maps used them to great effect on some recordings. See also: Eiderdowns, baking trays.
Also, a lot of current bands don't use enough harpsichord for my liking.
