Whatever happened to Envelopes?

Post by tonieee » Wed Jun 24, 2015 17:52

I'm listening to the first (only?) Envelopes album for the first time in ages and ages and it's blowing me away! I was just looking for something familiar to play in the background while I read my book but I'd forgotten just how amazing it is and I can't concentrate on my book while this is going on.

Does anybody know what happened to them. They toured loads around the time of the album, maybe about 10ish years ago and then quietly disappeared off my radar.

I discovered them when I supported them (as Hello, How Are You?) in Manchester and then saw them play live lots after then. They were a fantastic band.

So thanks to the modern internet I'm finally able to look up the the lyrics for Aubrey In The Country which I always thought I was mishearing because they were so gloriously bonkers. It turns out I was mishearing them (slightly) but they are gloriously bonkers!
There are cows and bees and nice trees
There are cows and bees and nice trees

I was in the country I was in the country
With Clint Eastwood and Steve McQueen
Running after me

There´s flies and lakes and long snakes
There´s flies and lakes and long snakes
I was in the country I was in the country
With Clint Eastwood and Steve McQueen
Running after me
And I'm there I am not scared

There are cows and bees and nice trees
I was in the country I was in the country
With Clint Eastwood and Steve McQueen
Running after me
And I'm there I am not scared

Oh yes. Forgetting the modern internet again! I'm always doing that! Anyone would think I'm old or something. Thanks Trev.

It does mention a second album in there. I'll have to see if I can find myself a copy.

BTW my misheard lyrics were:

There's all kinds of bees in my street
There's all kinds of bees in my street
I was in the country
I was in the country
With a teaspoon and Steve McQueen
Running after me
I'm a bear
I am not scared

Also there's a nice biography of them on last.fm written by the first bass player:

He was a lovely fella. I remember he was a big fan of Buffy which he mentions in the biography. I was sad when he left.

That's so weird because I was thinking just this the other day.

"Sister In Love" was a fantastic song, but they didn't have anything to match it, and that second album wasn't great.

I used to write about music back then, and did this review of the second album for Yahoo.

Envelopes Here Comes The Wind 4/10 Released on 11/2/07

A mere three years ago, Envelopes were exactly what you want from a new band: crazed, exciting, eccentric, charged with a madcap energy, slightly baffling, and a total bolt from the blue. Their single, “Sister In Love”, rattled along in its own deliriously peculiar ecosystem, throwing up an echo of what the Pixies might have sounded like under the tutelage of the B52s, and hammering an infectious chorus onto your psyche in the process. The live shows were more offbeat than energetic, but the potential was clear. This was a band poised to deliver something truly magnificent.

Then they disappeared. We’re told that the group, who’d previously scattered their members across Paris, London, Berlin and Sweden, had moved to a farmhouse near York to record this, their second album. And it seems that once they started living in the same place, they discovered they hated each other. Now you’d think that this would result in an album fizzing with tension and creative friction – after all, the Envelopes of yore always sounded like they were on the verge of falling apart. But, alas, the songs on this album suggest the band argued away whatever spark they had in the first place.

Despite being just 33 minutes long, this eleven track album feels like it goes on forever. And it feels like that because it rarely reaches a pace livelier than plodding, and it wears its influences just a little too obviously on its sleeve. Opening track “Party” might as well be called “We’ve Run Out Of Ideas, Where Did You Leave The Pixies Best-Of?”. “Freejazz” isn’t much better. As the Kim Deal-esque bassline throbs and the loud-quiet dynamic does its thing, you can feel your heart sinking. Where’s the ranting, the bouncing, the unhinged pop genius?

The answer, sadly, is that it’s all gone home. “Smoke On The Water, Eating The Sand, Hide The Grass” attempts to leap on the Eighties quirkpop bandwagon about two years too late. “Boat” could be a tweepop delight in the vein of fellow Swedes the Salty Pirates, but it’s bereft of any wit or direction. “Put On Hold” is better – odd squiggles and treated vocals creating a genuinely strange atmosphere. But once you’re past the sound, there’s not much else to the song. Like many of the tracks on this record, it sounds half finished – a shell of a song waiting for a few more ideas to show up.

It’s not all bad. “Life On The Beach” summons up some B-52s shimmy, and album highlight “I’d Like 2 C U” manages some of the sparkle and fun of the band we once knew and loved. If they’d turned in an entire album of songs like this, we’d be reaching for the superlatives. As it is, this is a strangely hollow offering from a band who once had too many ideas for their own good.

Sister In Love was one of their better songs but I think the whole of the first album is fantastic. Thanks for the review of the second album - I'll tread cautiously before deciding whether to buy it...

I think someone pushed them too hard... and they fell off the desk.
Cheers!

Cara put some of her old flyers up on Facebook the other week and it made me dig out that first Envelopes album again. MY GOD. It's incredible. I mean, I knew but it's still so insanely fun. The intro of 'It Is The Law' is waaaaaah! And 'Your Fight Is Over' tears me up... and and and. SO GOOD. I haven't stopped listening to it since.

This is my considered review ten years later. I miss them!

:-D This was my reaction when I listened to them for the first time in ages last year. They are so ace aren't they?

But I haven't listened to them since and my mind is going "yeah great band" - I should listen to them again so my whole body can experience that glittery pop explosion again!
