If you were making an indiepop chess set...

This will either be a fun one or devolve quickly into fierce arguments. Possibly both.

You're making an indiepop chess set. Two teams, 16 pieces per team. Who are your figures?

White Queen - Amelia Fletcher
White King - Bob Wratten

I WILL HAVE NO ARGUMENTS.

Oh, and Robert and Grant should be the Black Knights.

For my set, I had the idea of white being Team Europe and black being Team North America. (With apologies to all the great Asian and Aussie pop bands.) I'd want the big pieces to be just individuals while the pawns could be full bands.

This is very rough but there's also nothing on the line so whatever.

WHITE
King - Stuart Murdoch
Queen - Amelia Fletcher
Bishop - Morrissey
Bishop - Lawrence
Knight - Stephen Pastel
Knight - Jens Lekman
Rook - Elizabeth Morris
Rook - Bobby Wratten
Pawn - Tracyanne Campbell
Pawn - Stewart Anderson
Pawn - Harvey Williams
Pawn - Edwyn Collins
Pawn - Helen Love
Pawn - Duglas T. Stewart
Pawn - David Feck
Pawn - Gareth Campesinos!

BLACK
King - Calvin Johnson
Queen - Rose Melberg
Bishop - Stephin Merritt
Bishop - Jonathan Richman
Knight - Pam Berry
Knight - Daniel Johnston
Rook - Sean Tollefson
Rook - Kip Berman
Pawn - Math And Physics Club
Pawn - Cub
Pawn - The Smittens
Pawn - Joey Ramone
Pawn - Amy Linton
Pawn - The Shangri-Las
Pawn - Alvvays
Pawn - Thee Ahs

I *need* this. If it existed I'd even learn to like chess!

On a practical basis (because of course this needs to be practical so it can be sold in the glossy colour supplements) I'm not so keen on pawns being full bands - how will you fit all of Thee Ahs into such a tiny space?

And on a personal basis, I'd rather they be individuals so that Joel and Josh Meadows could be used, forming a steamroller pawn movement between them so as to cross the board and rescue their Queen Amelia from the clutches of the evil Morrissey (there are endless possibilities for storytelling in indiepop chess).

But there again, rather than being King, I was thinking that perhaps Morrissey and Edwyn Collins ought to be bishops on one side, being the high priests of indiepop that they are.

So many tough decisions to be made...

So now you're making me think of an indiepop boardgame where you pick from a number of different indiepop personalities and each have a different set of abilities and you need to choose a team that can work together to best overcome all the obstacles before the other teams.

Or an indiepop role playing game where instead of going down a dungeon to fight goblins and dragons and get lots of treasure you form a band and try to persuade Trev Oddbox to put out a single enabling you to get onto the main stage at indietracks!

I'm taking this too far aren't I?

Actually all we need to do is take my favourite ever boardgame:

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3244/hype

and change the musicians, venues, record labels and events to ones that are relevant to indiepop.

I might start work on that now instead of doing this job application that I've been procrastinating about all day!

What about a pop card game similar to Magic: The Gathering or Pokémon?

Heavenly played "boyfriend stays the same." Any cards played against their teammates will have no effect this round.

Tullycraft played "lost in light rotation." Choose a card at random from your opponent's hand, which they must discard.

The Lucksmiths played "music to hold hands to." Opponent cannot attack this round.

I literally have no idea at all what any of that means : )

your game needs super powers which also have disadvantages on the cards.
Like 'combatant is willing to pretend to believe in feminism to get laid' or ' player gains capability to convincingly enthuse about vegan food'

which would then be useful or disadvantageous powers, situationally.

and you need to be able to form GANGS, fascistic in nature but hypocritically using far left politics, to repress the poetry of the proletariat and keep indiepop ...y'know, indiepop.
YEAH NOW I'M GONNA FUCK THA LOCH NESS MONSTA!
