Make them a realistic (i.e. low) offer and apologise that you can't offer more and explain your circumstances. If they want to play your town and can't be arsed tendering every promoter in town you can be lucky. I've been pleasantly surprised before.

It's only Tuff Love. They can't be THAT expensive surely?
Unless it's gone up hugely in the past year then they're not that expensive. Is it not just their label manager who does the bookings too- think they're reasonably sympathetic to DIY stuff.

According to their facebook they have a proper hipstery booking agent based in that London.

There's also an email address which seems to be their direct one, but I guess it's a bit off to ask them directly when they have an agent.

I was speaking to a band that some people here have put on in the past, but who now have an agent, and they said the only reason they have an agent is to try and play the bigger festivals. This was after they'd played a gig on a tour their agent got them on to no-one on a Monday night supporting major label fodder in a provincial town, mind.

Circle of life.

Definitely have a punt at approaching the agent. The worst that can happen is that they ask for too much cash. Don't go in upfront saying that you can't offer much cash, etc. otherwise you won't be taken seriously. If you already have a venue in mind that you can suggest that would be helpful.

Occasionally it can actually work out better going through agents - plenty of times I've contacting bands asking about playing in Cambridge and they haven't even bothered getting back to me. Agents tend to reply, even if the ensuing discussion proves to be fruitless.

Think it's a bit different for me - as I'm usually bidding against quite a few promoters for a 'LONDON' show - hence the lack of success at getting touring bands for Odd Box when bigger promoters pick up the bands and put on the shows.
not really here

Wear your DIY credentials with pride. Always. What if you're so convincing at acting all professional that you convince yourself that you're a slick professional and then you become a slick professional and you lose your soul forever? WHAT THEN?

Why I'd probably start putting on pay to play gigs, do gigs where people have to say which band they're coming to see so I can distribute money accordingly and start calling popshows "gigs". Shudder.

Tonieee is correct. The greatest gig in the history of ever was on an Indietracks Monday.

There was also that one in Nottingham, the first time we saw the Deirdres. That was on an Indietracks Monday too.

I was bricking myself about that Deirdres one, and yet I reckon it was the finest gig I've ever been involved with. I thought no-one would be here. EVERYONE was there.

The British Library has released a gajillion antique illustrations into the public domain, for anyone to use and adapt. Copyright-free and all that. I'm thinking oooh, nice resource for those of use who need to make gig posters and flyers and stuff but can't draw. Check this out:

Hellooooo....I don't know if this is the right thread but I'm thinking of putting a screening of the Sarah records documentary on in Sheffield, with a view to perhaps screening other indiepop films (Serious Drugs, The Possibilities are Endless, etc). Would anyone come if I did?

Hello Chantelle! Yeah, I reckon you could get a few people there. I've seen it before but I'd totally watch it again at a Sheffield screening! Did you have anywhere in mind?

I'd put this on the Sarah Records thread and the Sheffield thread if I were you.

I think some sort of licensing issue means Serious Drugs can't be screened any more.

Hi Chantelle!

Yes I'd totally come. I've not seen the Sarah Records one yet and would really love to. And I know a few other people who I'm sure would come too.
