i'm still deeply resentful of the fact that i couldn't go to see them in Liverpool in 1998 cos it clashed with my dad's 50th birthday bash.

Mine too, i still curse myself for being too drunk to see them at ATP in 2006, i recall bits of it, but kept having to go outside to get some air and eventaully just gave up and went back to the chalet and went to bed. That was the last time i ever had the chance to see them.

i'm in the Slee-ter Kinney camp too, but i think it is meant to be Slay-ter Kinney isn't it?

I was at that Reading show too, although i can't remeber which Reading show it was, i know i saw them one year in the small tent, then the next year they played really early on the Saturday morning on the main stage and it was weird as there about 200 people watching all crowded round the centre of the barrier with no-one else around at all.

I'm definitely in the "slee" camp. Does anybody know where the name comes from?

I haven't listened to them in ages - I kind of lost touch with them a bit even though Dig Me Out is one of my favourite lps. I've just checked out their discography on wikipedia and it appears I'm missing the last two lps - I'll have to rectify that.

I've only seen them once. That was at the Cockpit in Leeds but I can't remember when.

I want to listen to them now but I don't think they'd be very conducive to working. Maybe some Cadallaca would be a bit less distracting while still giving me a Corin fix...

yeah that main stage one was 99 - thats the first one i went to and with my brother. wed not long got there and i remember just being totally blown away, and by pavement and the divine comedy but then my brother made me watch catatonia and made me leave early during blurs encore. i hated him for that.

me too! although i was really disappointed with S-K that night. i've posted about that in another thread though.

i first heard them when Dig Me Out came out, and i was fuming that i couldn't go see them on tour (around the same time as Little Babies came out, i think). A stereotypical teenage strop almost certainly followed!

i did some work experience at a local radio station not long after, and blagged a promo copy of The Hot Rock, which resulted in that Start Together opening every single mix tape for the next 3 years.

i saw them on the main stage in Leeds in 99, and yep, they were amazing. They played All Hands On The Bad One, which wouldn't appear on an album for another 2 years (i think), but was AWESOME. That song blew me away even more than the ones i was there to see them play. Later i met Janet Weiss and she was lovely.

Siiiggghhh...

When is that fim with Carrie Brownstein and James Mercer out?

"Formed in Olympia, Washington, the group's name is derived from Sleater Kinney Road, Interstate 5 off ramp #108 in Lacey, Washington, the location of one of their early practice spaces"

(off wikipedia)

Yay! One More Hour's my favourite but any of them would be good!

I'm trying to remember when I first heared of Sleater-Kinney. I do remember buying the first two lps from Stephen Pastels record shop in Glasgow which is when Velodrome played there so about 1997/8 I think but I can't remember if I'd heard of them before then or even if I already had Dig Me Out. I think Dig Me Out may have been my first Sleater-Kinney record but I can't remember where, when or why I bought it...

Ah, ok, i remember that day now, it was really hot wasn't it, was Beth Orton on before Pavement maybe? i remember watching her then heading back to my tent as i needed a bit of an afternoon nap, ended up not bothering to go back down for Pavement. Bizarre decision now looking back on it. That was the best Blur gig i ever saw too (until last year) but thats a discussion for another thread.

I think mine was similar to Will, just reading about them in the press around that time, but they were probably being namedropped by bis or Everett True or someone, i used to use that as some kind of taste barometer back then. I picked up the CD of Dig Me Out in the Camden Record and tape exchange for £6 on a whim and just fell in love with it.

One Beat is still my favourite record of theirs though.

That was '99, I was one of those 200 people as well. And then Quasi played in a small tent nearby only a few minutes later. In fact it sounds like everyone on this thread all saw most of the same bands at that festival. Except Catatonia.

First heard of SK when I went to see Elliott Smith in Sydney (would've been 98?) and Quasi were his back-up band and also support act, and someone said "that's her out of Slayter-Kinney", then I had a listen to Dig Me Out (still my fave of theirs) and became A Fan.

I say Slayter. You say Sleeter.

do we have to get tribalist about it now then?

Dig Me Out is still my fave too. Words + Guitar may be one of the most perfect pop songs i've ever heard.

interesting sleater-kinney fact: their first ever show was in sydney & stephen from the cannanes played drums.

i'd heard heavens to betsey & excuse 17 before, but other than liking "i wanna be your joey ramone" in all over me, sleater-kinney had passed me by ... i was introduced to them during my first week at uni in '97, bought the first three lps the next day but didn't see them play til summer '98.

the person who first played them to me also introduced me to humous the same night: i'm more grateful to her for that than the music really. still, i do have an s-k tattoo & did get excited when i saw the road sign in olympia.

favourite song = "stay where you are", favourite album = call the doctor (but dig me out is the best one)

apparently laura macfarlane wrote a lot of call the doctor but wasn't credited. boo. still, ninetynine are even better than s-k.

it's a cat's face, sort of in bits, from the t-shirt they were selling when i first saw 'em (they had a lot of cat designs over the years). it's a negative image of the original & a bit like a magic eye picture, hardly anyone can tell it's a cat's face without having it explained. i think only one person has ever recognised it as a sleater-kinney design.

i got the hefner ballerina done on my ankle at the same time
