Just brace yourself for the overbearing compression. It's certainly loud! Apparently the vinyl version doesn't suffer from it, but I've not heard that so I don't know for sure.

Now, I need to go and listen to REM and If I do that i'll be awake for hours . . . I can think of three straight away and I know there's more than that. Tomorrow, yes.

Today, my top five is...

Nightswimming
Gardening at Night (Eponymous version)
Life and How to Live It
Tongue
Time After Time

...but then that means I don't include These Days or Laughing or Leave or Hope...

ARGH. FIVE IS TOO FEW!

I listened to Accelerate in the car this morning, it's definitely more lively than the three albums before it. Need a couple more listens to really make up my mind, but I'm glad I took the plunge and had a listen. That last song about the end of the world is quite fun! There seems to be quite a few references to their older stuff in there.

Mimpkin asked me this last night but as I was pretty much asleep all I could mumble was Fall on Me and Superman, but to that I think I'd add Don't Go Back to Rockville, Driver 8 and oo err probably Orange Crush (or maybe Nightswimming if covers are disallowed).

I confess to not really knowing whether I like the "post good" output on the basis that I kind of lost interest after Monster and didn't really buy or listen to anything after that. Maybe there's some corking good stuff I'm missing out on.

edit . oo and maybe It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine), or World Leader Pretend or ... it's a bit tough this one, isn't it?

Oh yes, you're missing out on New Adventures in Hi Fi, which is one of the best things in the world!

Aw, you already know this, M., but I've been listening to Murmur this morning, and it's the most comforting thing ever.

the new album's growing on me more and more with every listen. some of it sounds like they've been listening to Monster again. best of all, none of it really sounds like Around The Sun or Reveal.

it's defo not a snooze-fest, in other words

Noted.

New REM records have been off the radar for years, I think the last one I actively enjoyed was New Adventures in Hi-Fi, but I've been listening to Murmur heaps lately for some reason.

There's a whole gig from 1982 on YouTube. It's been up there a while but people have just realised. They're playing somewhere in Raleigh, North Carolina. It might be the earliest live footage there is.
