Records of 2015

Post by northernlight » Sun Mar 01, 2015 10:22

I think I recently saw a tweet from Trev, commenting on just how many good records have come out already this year.

I would agree with this! It got me thinking of the ones that I have enjoyed so far this year

So far, I am thinking of:

No-one's Coming For Us - Trust Fund
Slow Changes - Lightning In A Twilight Hour
Fear of Falling Down - Witching Waves
Periscopes (d/l single) - Haiku Salut/ Jilk
No Cities To Love - Sleater-Kinney
Dross E.P - Tuff Love
I Want To Grow Up - Colleen Green
Era - Echo Lake

I know it's all subjective, but that's about one per week, on average - which seems high for me, at least..!

Are there others that folk would recommend?

I think there are a few good ones about to be released/ in the process of completion too.

Fear of Falling Down - Witching Waves (I think this was released at the end of last year, though)
Chants For Socialists - Darren Hayman
Everything Else Matters - Pinkshinyultrablast
Four to the Floorr - Joey Fourr
More Heat! More Panic! - The Manhattan Love Suicides
Get Back In Line - Nervous Twitch
Expect Delays - Evans The Death
Range Anxiety - The Twerps
Elephant - FIshboy (due last year but only arrived this year).
Switch Me On - The Fireworks

Bizarrely, I think my favourite album so far is Sleeping Tapes by Jeff Bridges. Yes, the actor Jeff Bridges. I can't get enough of it.

But I'd like to add:

Mysteries by Tigercats
Sauna by Mount Eerie
Good Grief by Grawl!x (ex-My Psychoanalyst singer doing sprawling ambient pop)
Home Cinema by Emma Kupa
Lost Themes by John Carpenter

My favorite album so far is Try Me by So Young. Feminist power pop. You can find them on Bandcamp.

Nic Hessler (f/k/a Catwalk) has his first full-length finally coming out and I've already pre-ordered it. I've been anxiously waiting for it ever since his Yay! days.

There's a bunch of records I'm looking forward to very much this year and this is from probably the LP that is toppermost of that pile of rad awesomeness:

Love this video... as a side note can't wait to see Younger Lovers when they tour the UK later this year

Wetdog have announced a third album. It's been 5 years at least.

The Erase Errata album is pretty great. Sleater Kinney is good too. Darren Hayman wins for best concept album, obviously.

Looking forward to the Sacred Paws EP, Tigercats, and probably others I've forgotten. Also The Hurriers, not indiepop but a socialist punk band from Barnsley whose album is out on (of course) May 1st.

Anyone know if the Bjork album is any good? or Gang of One?

The Bjork album is very good, yes. Stonemilker is the best thing she's done in years.

There are a couple of exciting things in the pipeline from two Leeds bands over the next few months... ;)

Come To The Fabulon by A New International has been my favourite album of the year so far. Can't believe I already have Tigercats, Evans The Death and Trust Fund albums to catch up on too!

Belle & Sebastian are definitely my favourite of the year so far. It's so good to be excited about them again.

I keep buying their new albums, listening to them once and then never touching them again. I wasn't going to do it anymore but I'm being tempted back in again...
