Mama's got a brand new bag - or, a thread about bags

Post by let it ride » Sat Jul 19, 2008 10:34 pm

Stolenwine asked about it in the accessories thread and I have to say, as bags are my favourite thing to buy (more than shoes (harder to get right!) and earrings (although they do take up less space..!) I absolutely think they deserve their own thread.

I think I have about 15 day bags, less evening bags... but getting there too. Last time I took a picture my daytime collection it looked like this:
Image

It does make things a wee bit harder as I don't use leather products at all, but there are great leather imitations that I like.

Accessorize is probably my favourite place to shop for bags. They're great and, in my experience, don't break easily. Right now, I'd kind of like these:

those last 2 are such perfect evening bags, astrid! i love them. i was looking through my evening bag collection and i don't really like any of them. i did hit up accessorize today but the stock was so low and nothing really caught my eye (looks like all the good stuff has been bought up in the sales)

i never know when to start new threads about stuff but i'm glad you've started a bag thread. do you think you could move the last 3 posts from the accessories thread into this one? i am really dumb and can't figure out how to do it from the admin panel. duh.

I tried, but I've never had to do any proper moderating, and, um, i almost deleted the entire accessorises thread. So maybe I can get someone else to do it!

And yes, I'm totally getting a wedding bag from Accessorize, ah! I know it's cliché but I love Sex and the City for glamour inspiration in terms of 'grown up' bags and things. I love especially Charlotte's nice little clutch bags.

I love this one, I've looked at it in the shop and it's even reduced now... sadly I am skint until the end of August, really, so I'll have to wait to see if it is there when I have mo!

I'm so, so weak for silky little bags like that. They're so beautiful!

Oh no, I looked at Dorothy Perkins' website, and they have a ton of lovely bags in at the moment. Oh dear. It's a good thing I am not allowed to do any shopping until August as I literally have no money at all. But a girl can dream! I recognise most of the designer houses that they kind of rip off, but honestly, I really don't care. It's not like I could a) afford it b) want to buy leather goods.

Fiorelli cream bag with locks (oh I just LOVE this, imagine how chic it would be in winter with a nice black coat, some dark purple tights and black flats. I love it!)

I love these (is it Bottega Veneta who does them, isn't it?) type of bags with the weaved things. I love them!

Are men's bags allowed in here? I just bought one like this yesterday for going away at the weekend, but I'm not sure if I like it. It's kind of cycle courier-y. The picture's not too good but it's a kind of blue camoflage thing. It also looks kind of like a handbag there but it's not.

I got one of those Cath Kidson weekend bags yesterday, like this:-

but in this fabric:-

Image

The one in the picture isn't in the sale but the one I got was, and was reduced from £60 to £40, which was good as I was thinking of paying full whack for one a while back. I do like that new one too, mind.

There is too much nice stuff in that shop, I should keep away from it really. The sale is quite good though.

Oh and this isn't a bag but I got it too just because I like it:-

Ohh... I love bags... I think my collection is nearly as comprehensive as let it ride's! Still working on it though.
I am not the kind of evening bag girl at all, I mainly prefer bigger bags because I always think those little bags look stupid on me. I am quite tall...
Anyway, when I stayed in London last weekend I bought three bags! One vintage brown leather second hand bag, a black one from Accessorize and a cutie one from a shop with cute things.

Do you use all the bags you have?

I've got that button tin! It's lovely isn't it? All my buttons fit in it perfectly, with room to spare. I squealed like a giddy mouse when I first saw it.

I think it's more of a me thing - I like buttons, and I buy lots of them aiming to sew them onto clothes, but they're all so nice I can never decide which ones to use, so I just keep them in a tin and, um, look at them a lot.

i have a button box as well! i'll also buy really dreadful items of clothing if they have nice pretty or vintage buttons. and its nice to have a place to keep all the spare buttons that come with clothes when you buy them, otherwise they end up in the mess, lost forever.

I wasn't necessarily going to use mine to store buttons, that's the kind of maverick I am. I don't think it would make my tendancy to lose spare buttons any less likely, they'd just never find their way there. I've a feeling it's currently housing a jack adaptor. I think she does a tin in a different pattern with 'pins' written on it, perhaps I'll get that too and use it to store a really small amount of pasta in or something.

Hayley, you should avoid the Kath Kidson shop if you're ever in London, all of the chintzy stuff that I didn't like in there seems to have gone and they've crammed it full of incentive buys like that, the buggers.

I buy every bag with the intention of using it ALL the time. Some I have hardly used (mostly for practical reasons though, that they turn out to be a bit uncomfortable or break or something). I am trying to go through a switching bags phase, but I keep so much junk in mine that it gets a bit stressful to do it in the mornings, as I am likely to foret stuff then!

I have to try hard not to buy more bags...people keep giving them to me as gifts though-- I got an interesting purse that had a 7" record in a see-through front compartment. I don't buy any leather either, but it's amazing how many bags I can amass. Luckily, the no-leather thing has kept me safe from an enormous shoe collection.

I'm on the hunt for a nice weekend bag - most of the time I use either a saddle bag or a cute grey book bag from 10 Swedish Designers. Last weekend I saw these two and I can't quite decide between them:

Mimco bags are super nice and super super soft, but they're also a bit expensive :(

Oh, you like 10-gruppen too? When I am back in Stockholm I am always in their shop drooling, they do everything from dog leads to baby bibs to cute make-up bags and unpatented tote bags. AND you can buy the fabrics too! Here is a pic from their shop:

This is a lovely new pattern! I love how great their bags look with "boring"/simple/black outfits:

Yes! 10 Swedish Designers is one of my favourite shops in the world - their oilcloth shopping bags are brilliant. On my first visit to Stockholm in 2003, I picked up a grey bag with big black and white spots on it. It was used beyond its death, so this year upon my second visit, I picked up a new one - grey with a white floral/vine pattern on it. Sadly there isn't a sample on the website to show.

For what they are, they're quite expensive bags, though :(

Ohhhh... I love 10 Gruppen, too!
When I was in Stockholm a few weeks ago I went back to their shop but just couldn't by anything for exactly the reason that you mentioned: too expensive!
But now I think I should have just gotten over it and bought one of those bags. They are so pretty! Next time I go, I have to get one...

mr.stolenwine got me this as part of my birthday present! it also came with a cute little makeup bag/pencil case that was a gift with purchase. score! it's a decent size for taking along on daytrips and stuff or just using as an everyday bag (although i'm currently too in love with my budgies bag to let it go any time soon)
