Let's talk about socks, baby

Post by humblebee » Wed Apr 07, 2010 11:49 am

'Trainer socks'. What are these? I accidentally bought some the other week. Absurd. In several decades of wearing trainers, never once have I felt the need for some socks that barely cover my heel and leave me with cold ankles. Young people, please explain.

I like a trainer sock. In the olden days when I used to wear shorts and do some exercise I liked them because you didn't have a big bit of sock going up your leg making you look like some kind of nerdy goon dweeb.

But it would be demented to wear them under a trouser. You can have your socks as high and dweeby as you like under a trouser and no one will ever know.

Agreed - they are to be worn with shorts (or, if you're feeling frisky, 3/4-lengths) or not at all.

It's more comfortable than folding half a sock back.

Oh, they're for wearing with shorts are they? Well, I can see that. Thanks, young people!

But surely the name misplaces the emphasis. Shouldn't they be called shorts socks instead?

Haven't you got a freelancer's typos to be correcting? Is this where my taxes are going?

Talking about socks is a tried and tested avoidance strategy.

Trainers are still quite an important part of the ensemble.

You could wear them with proper shoes, i suppose... but proper shoes and shorts sounds like a monstrous combination.

No type of sock (trainer or otherwise) should ever be worn with sandals. Surely on this we can ALL agree.

Well, in which case, trainer socks are not the socks for you, Mr Ants.

True. Stripey knee socks are more the ticket.

hold on, this is what we mean by a trainer sock, innit?

Image

essentially a soaking up option for sweaty feet

I prefer this type of sock (sorry this was literally the only picture I could find), the tube sock:

tube socks kind of rock

Tube socks make me think of that scene in American pie where he's using one as a masturbatory aid. So unfortunately they're synonomous in my mind with that; and just locker rooms in general. Yeah they sound like sweaty leftover socks you'd find in a locker room.

Trainer socks are rubbish too, I find they feel a little odd, and if they slip slightly then there's no way you can pull them up without taking a shoe off. (unless I'm thinking of ankle socks? )

Gimme Totes Toasties any day.

Aw, do they still make those? Totes got me through many a winter when I was a poor student and temp and couldn't afford to run the electric storage heaters in my single-glazed flat!

tube socks remind me of skateboarders/footballers in the seventies and porn (possibly also of a seventies vintage)

those trainer socks remind me of ankles itching with eczema

tube socks therefore- and perhaps controversially- win

Does anyone else resent buying socks? Like, get a bit miffed about it?

asda's top for socks, unlike m&s socks they don't perish after two washes and you can currently get 7 very nice differently coloured socks for a fiver

buying 7 differently coloured socks though ... that's bad strategy. Instead of a steady attrition of mysteriously missing socks of the same colour you'll just wind up with lots of odd ones .... now is THAT value?

i wish i was fibbing when i say they made us do that in training.

as well as the 'asda chant', which involved the trainer shouting "who's number one?" with the trainees having to respond "THE CUSTOMER! ALWAYS!" and then making that "HEURGH!" sound that i associate with american sports chants and some hardcore records.

It might actually be spelled 'HUH!' but that seems a little more dismissive than was required of us.

anyway.

it is, because I'm not daft enough to lose socks... it's not that hard to retain your correct number of socks... I live in a 3 room flat, if I lose one sock of a pair if it's not in one room it'll be in another... but I don't tend to toss my socks off (stop that tittering, we'll have no titters here) and throw them about the place... that's the way you get odd pairs, chucking a sock down the back of the sofa or behind a grandfather clock never to be seen again

I take pride in my socks
