I decided to run myself. I was sore before I even finished the race. I've never had that happen before! I was three minutes faster than last time, but one minute slower that my first race. At least I'm moving forward, now, though. Oh... and very very sore today.

yay! good for you nan!
I totally wimped out on running today even though I knew it was my last chance before the rains started - forecast says DAYS. and I might wimp out on my race on Saturday because the thought of running in the piss pouring rain is so unappealing.
Do you guys run in the rain? Who does that?!

Re: Running
I look like i've been running in the rain by the time i've finished.
I've done 25k at the gym already this week. That means i can drink loads this weekend, right?

Re: Running
I find it immensely difficult to run this time of year. I think I started running in 2007 and every winter since the first one I've promised myself I will keep running and not slack off. And every March I've found myself thinking hmm...expanding girth, unused running shoes, spot the connection..
What I find helps hugely is having a long race to frighten me into getting off my arse. Haven't got that at the moment but am looking around for one. More procrastination.

Re: Running
when it's really hot here, running in the rain is quite nice. but one time the rain turned into a thunderstorm and I decided against running in the rain if I can help it.yubo wrote: Do you guys run in the rain? Who does that?!
i always liked gardening in the rain here. Mosquitos don't bite when it's raining.

Re: Running
ouch. no fun.
my friend was running in those weird shoes that have a space for each toe and are essentially like running barefoot. They evidently get really slippery in the rain.

my friend has those! I'll have to warn him about the rain.
I totally missed my race on Saturday. I'm a wimp.

Re: Running
I had my first real run in the rain. It was not enjoyable. I'd signed up for this big woman's only half-marathon in Central Park and it cost me $60 so I couldn't really justify bailing when I saw the forecast but TWO HOURS in the POURING RAIN is two hours too many. I was dripping wet right down to my underpants even. I haven't looked at my shoes since but d'you think they're ruined?

Re: Running
I'm going to start training for a 5k run. I know it's not far, but I'm a lard-arse, so it's quite a big step. I'm going to get sponsored to hopefully make me persevere. My plan is to run twice a week (more if I have chance) and do my 5k at the beginning of May.
Is Nike+ good, then? I think you can work it with the iPhone, can't you? Gadgets for the win.

Re: Running
Good for you! That's how I started (and running 1800m used to kill me at the start). Just keep it slow and steady and go a bit further each time. Race for Life used to have some nice little training plans up, don't know if they'd be any use?Carys wrote:I'm going to start training for a 5k run. Re: Running
Thanks for the tip about the training plans - I've seen a few different ones, but I think I'm going with one of the apps which lets you choose your own music and tells you when to run and walk in an overly enthusiastic computerised voice.
Twice a week doesn't seem like much, I guess, but it's a routine I know I can sustain at least. Now I just have to overcome the feeling of looking like a twat.

Re: Running
Did you overcome your fear? After the first time of venturing out in running leggings, it gets easier.
Do any of you run to music, and if you do is it indiepop? I find some songs work wonders when it comes to keeping me going. "We're From Barcelona" by I'm From Barcelona is particularly good if you sing along to it quite loudly. Not so good in the middle of Glasgow, but if you pick your place.
Sometimes its nice just to hear the world pass by, though.

Re: Running
I sure did overcome my feat. I ran about 2.5 miles this morning, and you know what...? I enjoyed it! It's the most I've done so far.
I listen to lots of Riot Grrrl when I'm running, and I *have* to listen to music or I'd go mad. I choose a playlist of bouncy songs. Like Kung Fu by Ash.
I'm down to do my first 'proper' 5k in early June, but I reckon I could do one now. Once I've done that, I'll start building up to 10k. Who knows? Maybe next year I'll do the Marathon!

Re: Running
I started running 2 months ago and was utterly hopeless (an ex smoker who would get out of breath climbing a flight of stairs only weeks ago), but now I'm building up slowly towards being, if not a good runner, a functional one. I started in the colder months and found it hard to go outside (there's nothing more demoralising than being passed by a 19 stone pensioner) in the cold, so purchased a half-price treadmill. I figured it would pay for itself within a year instead of buying gym membership.
I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm two stone lighter (a lot due to a dieting regime) and can fit into clothes I've had in the wardrobe for ten years and feel great (and feel I look great even if I don't). I do 5k in about 35 minutes (which isn't fast, but is improving almost daily now) 3 times a week and am pretty much ready to run outside. I'm lucky enough to live by the river here in Nottingham so have a beautiful stretch to run along.
