I've taken the (somewhat foolhardy) decision to wait until the series has finished before I read the books. Like some sort of idiot.Gordon wrote:But you do all know Season 3 already exists in paper form... I'm not sure whether to go straight in or start from the beginning. Each audiobook is about 33 hours long...

Re: Game of Thrones
On facebook, there's lots of nerd-whining about deviation from the books. I think that would probably make it more fun to read after you've seen it.

Re: Game of Thrones
it does, you can't do what you can do in a book in a telly programme so you have to be a bit smoke and mirrors about it () and so as long as the deviation is creative (which I think it has been) rather than just a desperate conceit, it works, and I think it has worked so far really well
and reading the books after is a bit like getting a remix that expands on what you've seen on the telly, it's like you enter a new dimension, there's telly 'game of thrones' and book 'game of thrones' and they're sort of the same but also different, it's like parallel worlds
it blows my mind, in many respects

like that smoke baby perhaps who killed renly

Re: Game of Thrones
I do very much look forward to reading the books in 7 years time. Plenty of other awesome new fantasy novels to be reading in the meantime.
In addition to the previous statement, my levels of massive geekery can be confirmed by the fact that I've just bought myself a House Targaryen t-shirt. Suave.

I'd go for the sigil of house bolton on a t-shirt... who couldn't resist a flayed man upon one's chest (in a manner of speaking)?

Re: Game of Thrones
I've just had an epiphany that I thought i'd share. Whenever I saw Sandor "The Hound" Clegane I was wondering where I knew him from and it just clicked that he was "Kenny" from "The Book Group" and was also "Father Critchon" on Shameless! I feel better now.

Re: Game of Thrones
I've been reading the books after finally catching up on the series at the end of last year. I think season one is pretty faithful to the book, but season 2 diverges substantially more. I think a lot of it is down to not having the budget to show all the castles, cities and massive hosts of men that George R.R. Martin frequently describes...

I will be flying to Toronto when the new season starts but I have been psyching myself up with the HBO GOT podcast trailers.
