Re: Game of Thrones
This is an archived thread on the Westeros forum (a long-running GoT fansite), it's from 2006, and in it members of the forum 'just for fun' fantasy cast a movie of Game of Thrones... for any fans of the show it should be an amusing read/mindless way to kill time, first post gets Tyrion right (although Peter Dinklage is referred to as 'guy from The Station Agent'):

Re: Game of Thrones
We're currently in that short period of time between the previous series coming out on DVD and the next series starting in which I'm able to read this thread. So: woah! Episode 9! What a total shocker that was!

Re: Game of Thrones
Worth a read about the link between episode 9 and real events at Edinburgh Castle.

(although the events have been mythologised a bit, worth reading wikipedia and googling around if you want a more balanced understanding of the black dinner)

Thanks for that Gordon. I'd not heard of the black dinner before. Next you'll be telling us you've got white walkers up there!Gordon wrote:Worth a read about the link between episode 9 and real events at Edinburgh Castle.

We've started watching series three again now that we've come to the end. I'm quite addicted to GoT...

Re: Game of Thrones
Hah, excellent! I see someone suggested Sean Bean for Ned Stark too. Also, the fact that someone suggested Josh Holloway for Jaime Lannister amuses me because I thought it was actually him in the role for the first few episodes.a fog of ideas wrote:This is an archived thread on the Westeros forum (a long-running GoT fansite), it's from 2006, and in it members of the forum 'just for fun' fantasy cast a movie of Game of Thrones... for any fans of the show it should be an amusing read/mindless way to kill time, first post gets Tyrion right (although Peter Dinklage is referred to as 'guy from The Station Agent'):

I'm not sure if this has been posted here before:
"How Dothraki, a language in HBO's Game of Thrones, was created to be as nuanced as any natural language:"

Re: Game of Thrones
Pretty good!
I got confused by the fact they changed one of the actors in the Danaerys storyline, but other than that I just about remembered everything that was going on...

Re: Game of Thrones
I thoroughly enjoyed myself... loved how they introduced Oberyn, the Red Viper, and the arrival of the Thenns was grand too... also dug how Jon's got a bit more grit about him... the closing (long) scene was epic... next week can't come soon enough

This guy's a hero! Next time someone asks me what the use is of an MA in Linguistics, I'm sending them that link.RITH wrote:I'm not sure if this has been posted here before:

It's Sonny (Michiel Huisman) from Treme!Gordon wrote:I got confused by the fact they changed one of the actors in the Danaerys storyline

He doesn't look much like the original actor who played Daario Naharis (Ed Skrein):

I read about it in advance (Dutch actor and all that), but I can imagine a lot of people must have been confused about this.

Ned: "I've heard it said that poison is a woman's weapon."
Grand Maester Pycelle: "Yes, women, cravens and eunuchs. Did you know that Lord Varys is a eunuch?"
But I don't think it's Varys, the most 'craven' person present was the victim, so...

Re: Game of Thrones
I know it's all about the big thing at the end now, but now that part's settled for me I keep going back to all the other parts I loved this week.
I love Oberyn! That chat he had with Cersei was deadly (had to borrow some Dublin phrasing there). And that look he gave to Loras!
I don't want to know if we'll get more and more of him, but I hope we do. He's my favorite part of the show right now.

What's her name? I think it was the bride's grandmother. Olenna Tyrell? Her granddaughter is now the queen, without the scary abusive husband. Did you see her looks during the wedding celebrations?

I reckon the Tyrells had the least to gain, as presumably Cersei's youngest son now becomes king. Maergary needed to have Joffrey's son in order for them to hold on to power (unless Olenna realised they were better off out of it completely, but there were easier ways, like running back to Highgarden before the wedding).
Problem is everyone with motive couldn't really get close enough, and anyone with the means didn't really have the motive.
Having slept on it I now reckon Cersei offed the Joff by accident. The poison was meant for Maergary but the business with the spilled wine meant Joffers drank it instead.
The speculating is fun.

But yeah, I'm really enjoying Oberyn. Plus we got our first "Hodor" of the season.

I don't want to be one of those book people and I'd state, with some assurance, that even as a book reader it's not clear whodunnit yet, in fact I reckon most book readers would've been surprised at the events in last night's episode as they weren't anticipated so early in this series and joffrey's death was generally expected to occur towards the end of this season's run with the whodunnit following in the next season... so with that in mind having read the books but using what we've seen in the tv show (because the books are not a definite map to how the tv series pans out) I still have two main suspects in mind... one is granny tyrell, this seems to be the main suspect for tv viewers but there's also another suspect who's been notable by his absence this season so far (mostly because he sailed off at the end of the last season)...
if granny tyrell's plan is to claim the throne- through the marriage of her granddaughter, margaery- this is still possible and I'd argue it's still possible because margaery is 1) so popular with the commonfolk of king's landing and b) because it's unlikely suspicion will fall on the tyrells, a tyrell-lannister pact through marriage to the next heir (tommen) would be a convenient way to maintain stability in king's landing (something tywin would want) and to avoid another war (something neither the tyrells or lannisters can afford, financially or in other ways)... tywin won't realise he's making a pact with the matriarch who may have engineered the death of his grandson, that seems rather neat...
on the other hand, littlefinger, would benefit from having tyrion in the frame, it frees up sansa to be smuggled away (who we suspect he has all sorts of nefarious plans for) and puts the smartest, most incisive lannister out of the picture (as well as in the frame, I'm mungling my metaphors here, I realise)
I definitely don't think it's tyrion, and I think that's clear to most. it could be cersei but that would go against her, dare I say it, lioness protectiveness of her children. perhaps she was planning to poison margaery but her plans went awry? I can't see tywin killing his own grandson because of all the potential chaos that would follow and it would go against his apparent personal code of honour, but who digs chaos most of all and thrives on not having very much honour at all? littlefinger
it may be revenge on oberyn's part but the method of dispatch doesn't seem how he'd operate and his beef seems to be with tywin (and the mountain), most of all, with joffrey dead, is he all square or does he plan to kill every lannister while he's in kings landing? the other suspect is varys, of course, but what would he gain? presumably tommen makes for a more placid, malleable king? but maybe that's granny tyrell's plan too, with her margaery being the real power behind the throne?
it's a dilly of a pickle

I hope they won't be doing one of those "we'll ignore what just happened completely and focus on the other storylines first" episodes tonight.
