Nintendo Wii

Post by Mr Bear » Tue Feb 19, 2008 18:33

I'm thinking of getting a Wii this weekend (or wiikend, ho ho). If so I'll either be posting in this thread saying it's AMAZING or that it was a waste of money, but I'd rather not be the only person in here sooo anyone else got one? If so eulogise/vent away!

We got one for Christmas. It's the first console I've had since the original playstation and I'm not much of a gamer so I don't know how it compares to others but I really like it. The controller is really easy and fun to use.

So far we've got:
- Wii Sports - very good, my favorites are bowling and golf.
- Wii Play - this is very good also and I would say an essential purchase. It comes with an extra controller and some nice little games for only a bit more than a controller.
- Wario Smooth Moves - a bit disappointing, the games are funny but far too short even for mini-games. I wish I'd bought Mario Party 8 instead, it sounds a lot better. But it does have a fantastic song on one level that I need to work out to put onto cd somehow!
- Cosmic Family - rubbish, even for a 5 year old.
- Links Crossbow Training - bought this on Monday and haven't been able to stop playing it yet - only £20 from WH Smiths and includes a gun adapter for the controller.

It's been out a couple of weeks, hasn't it? I played it the other day. I don't like that steering wheel. I'm a terrible fucking driver.

My friend got the import of Smash Bros. though and it's the most fun ever. I smashed plenty.

I'm going to get it at some point because it looks ACE.

Both yesterday and today my fitness age on wii sports came out as younger than I actually am - get in! I hadn't done it for a month or so, since I went to measure it while massively hungover and it came out as...70! I was nearly sick.

Wii fitness sounds cool! But I haven't tried it.

My best friend has a Wii Station and we tried out Super Mario Party 8. But we didn't really get it!
I mean, I know nothing much about video games and stuff but I always think that I am not too clueless when it comes to technology. But obviously... I must be.
I only got to that point where you play a boardgame and hit stars with your head and gain points. But what about all the fun action games that the people play in the commercial?

If anyone can give me a hint on how I can get from the boardgame where all I do is throw dice to the actually rope skipping and what there is... I would be veeeery thankful!

I've only played the gamecube version, but on that each character rolls the dice, moves on the board, and then at the end of the round a mini-game is played, and the players receive (or sometimes lose/transfer) coins depending on how well they did in the mini-game. The idea is to reach the star on the board before the other players, and buy it with the coins you've collected. Person with the most stars wins.

Thanks for the reply, daniel!
So I will have to go through the boring board game until I get to the action games? Good to know! Will try to show more patience next time I play.

I guess so! I think some of the games might be unlockable too, so eventually when you've completed most of the boring bits, you'll be able to play the fun bits whenever you want to.

Sounds quite a lot like hard work.

MarioKart just came out in the US and Canada. Mine is on its way to my house. I'm SO excited. I want to make Mario do wheelies into Bowser and Toad. I hate Toad.

I'm going to get Smash Bros. eventually. My friends only like to play video games with me for like 20 minutes, then I think they get a little put off by the maniacal, obsessive look in my eye and want to stop. Too bad, I'd love to blast them all with Pikachu's lightning bolt.

It sounds fantastic and I do really want one but I've yet to talk to anyone who has tried it. One of my flickr friends received his yesterday so I guess I'll know more soon. Will let you know.
Give over.

Even if Mario Galaxy was the only game on the console it would still be worth double what it costs in the shops.
Well, almost. It really is an incredible game though, there is literally nothing that comes close to it for me, not even Goldeneye, Ocarina of Time... Tetris, Pac Man, whatever, Galaxy is the best.

And wii sports is great for multi player, as is mario party and the new mario kart looks great, even though I haven't played it yet.

I got Mario Kart today. Online mode is SO FUN and it works so well! I had no lags and lots of people were playing. I ended up racing against my sister and her husband in Toronto for two hours.

Mario Galaxy is an incredible game. I got stuck on one galaxy and have yet to go back. Maybe next weekend.

that's really cool that you can play online with friends long distance. Now I want one!

I just played at a friend's for the first time. Boxing, bowling and mario smash something? I suck at the fighting ones. Though I think when his Wii Fit arrives, I'll be over all the time.
Butt.

We bought a Wii last weekend (just in time for the summer...) and I have to say I love it (although I love no console so much as the Nintendo DS).

But...
...we're still having trouble actually setting it up though - we can't seem to get the DVD and Wii plugged in at the same time...
...a couple of the games we have are ones I also have on the DS (Trauma Centre, Bomberman Land) and I have to say, in both cases the DS versions are much much better. I think the games for the Wii very much have to be designed for the Wii, if you know what I mean.

Wii Play and Wii Sport and great :D

My family bought me a Wii for my birthday - that's not till Wednesday, but I met up with them all earlier today so they gave me it then. I've actually never had a console of any sort before, but I quite fancied one of these because of the different ways you can use the controller - I've never really fancied just pressing buttons.

So far I'm enjoying the bowling thing on Wii Sports. I've not tried the tennis, but it looked OK when Sarah was playing it. Wii Play looks good because it's loads more of that kind of stuff, isn't it? We'll probably get that since it has a second controller with it.

I reckon Mario Kart might be fun too, and I think I'll have a look at what classic stuff I can download, assuming I can get it working with our router.
