how strange... the name seems very familiar but i'm sure i've never been there.

ah ha! i'm pretty sure that in one of my favourite films, Pocket Money (Small Change)/ Argent de Poche, by Truffaut, one of the little boys reads out a postcard from that town in class. i've just read up and apparently the film is set in a village 20 miles east of C-F so that's possible... were people sending postcards from 20 miles away in those days?! or maybe they mention the town, but the postcard is from somewhere else. annoyingly i don't own a copy of the film to watch and check up on this: i usually get it out the library. maybe i can pick it up again tomorrow.

apparently clermont ferrand had ties with michelin tires, and recent news is they have a tram now! they've had a film festival every year since 1991. so it's not all bad, is it? :-/ what happened to you there nohnohyeh?!

Erm, I'm not sure. I might have been. I've certianly been near there, and have stayed in the town of Lempdes, which is not far away.

Wow Amy, that's one of my favourite films as well! We used to have it on video, but we lost it/taped over it by mistake and I've not seen it for years. I'd love to see it again.

Clermont Ferrand's very industrial isn't it? I've heard it's pretty rough there.

Do they make whisky there too?

oh, i had argent de poche on my harddrive but deleted it. need to get it again then.

the place did seem a bit rough yes, i lived just outside the (clermont) city center and the surrounding were pretty worn down. might be even worse on the other side of town where there were large apartment complexes, which didn't appear to be that fancy.

no idea 'bout the whiskey part. i only had non-local but national beer, biere de garde, alsace etc, and it was shit.

it was raining during my whole stay, the nightlife was dull and people were, sorry to say, not very attractive. i had read up before my leave and learned about a 60's club, but when i went there they only played reggae and cheesy spanish music. :(

and sadly i was feeling ill (hadn't eaten much so it was really my own fault) on the night of the taxi taxi! gig, it was still amazing though.

hm what more. i went there alone and the weather completely wiped out my philosophical ambitions for the trip.

though in case you happen to end up there i recommend the following places:

café pascal
still irish bar
les frères berthom

I've never been in Clermont-ferrand, but I know there is a good band out of this town, the wendy darlings...
I live about 200 km west, in the glorious city of Limoges, well known for china, the railway station, and an indiepop label named anorak records ; ) !
