There's a big branchy tree right outside my window and there's always one (they don't seem to travel in multiples in my neighborhood for some reason--they are not "gang" squirrels, I guess) in that tree doing his/her thing. My son and I make up stories about "him" and we call him "Nutley". We've been watching "him" play for three years. I will be very sad when my son gets older and realizes we've been watching about 300 squirrels and that Nutley was probably eaten by a dog a dozen times over.

This was nothing about squirrels being shifty--pardon the tangent.

Funny I should spot this thread, because I saw a squirrel fall out of his tree the other day. There was a bunch of scrambling and rustling of leaves, and then THUD, a squirrel landed on the ground right in front of me. He appeared to be ok, but quite embarrassed.

wow... that's all they have to do all day. If you were a squirrel and couldn't stay in your tree you'd have to ask yourself what you were up to really. What's the point?

In my head I wish he was wearing a parachute.

yeats knew all about this shit.

To A Squirrel At Kyle-Na-No

Come play with me;
Why should you run
Through the shaking tree
As though I'd a gun
To strike you dead?
When all I would do
Is to scratch your head
And let you go.

We do also have a Squirrels are Nifty thread.

But it's fun to keep posting this one for taunting a layer of chips.

I didn't think it was possible that anything was more terrifying than a squirrel's back when it was running, but I think that the underside of a squirrel's tail trumps it. It looks like an undercooked barbecue sausage. With hair on it.

Make it go away.

Squirrel caused outage that slowed voting in Vero

VERO BEACH — A frisky squirrel caused a 1 ½-hour power outage affecting 800 customers including the Indian River County Library and Courthouse on Thursday morning, city power officials said.

The outage slowed - but didn't stop - early voting at the library. During the outage, early voting went on by flashlight. Further information about how the votes were processed was not immediately available.

At about 8:45 a.m., a squirrel leaped from a tree onto a power line, causing a fire that tripped an electrical switch, knocking out a power line feeding a section of the downtown, said Randall McCamish, the city’s director of electrical transmission and distribution.

The dead squirrel was found lying on the ground.

Once the power was restored, early voting continued as usual.

Amazing. Nothing can stop democracy, not even a squirrel.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingsall made good use of grey squirrels last in his programme night.

Eat ' em, did he?

Apparently they're fairly tasty.

There was an interesting article in The Sunday Times (I think it was the Times, I don't buy it) about a man from Northumberland or there abouts who has devoted his efforts to ridding Britain of the grey part of the squirrel (scurius?) population. All well and good perhaps; red ones are cuter and endangered, but he insists on shooting them or killing them off with any number of astonishingly malovelent traps. He has an army to help him, some of them call him from all over the country when they spot a grey and he goes and kills them.

I like red squirrels, but I can't think of this as anything over than an abomination.
